Crestor (Rosuvastatin) is a statin drug approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2003 to treat adult patients with high cholesterol or triglycerides. Crestor works by inhibiting the enzyme that is responsible for cholesterol production.

Patients should not use Crestor or the other statins to lower their levels of “bad” cholesterol, according to the product insert. Patients with a family history of coronary artery disease, a history of heart attack, or if they are using other statins to lower their cholesterol, a heart condition known as hypercholesterolemia, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood enough blood to carry enough cholesterol to the brain and body, are those who may need to use statins for lowering cholesterol.

INTRODUCTION

Crestor® is an anti-retroviral medication. It helps to relieve symptoms of advanced-stage HIV infection (AIDS) by limiting or stopping the effect of antiretroviral therapy (ART) taken orally or by mouth. The active ingredient is the same in other AIDS drugs. A class of drugs known as protease inhibitors (PIs), it stops HIV from reaching the brain or from binding to viral enzymes.

Because of its side effects, Crestor is rarely recommended for use in patients with severe AIDS. However, Crestor is recommended for use in patients with advanced AIDS who are not able to take other medications (such as protease inhibitors) that could affect Crestor.

Crestor is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient, as it has not been studied in patients with AIDS. In patients with AIDS, Crestor should not be used during pregnancy and in patients who are receiving antiretroviral therapy treatment for transplant or cancer.

Crestor should not be used in patients with a history of liver disease, severe heart problems, high blood pressure, history of seizures or diabetes, or if there is an allergy to Crestor. Crestor can lower blood pressure and may cause dizziness in patients with high blood pressure. Patients with a history of seizures should not drive, use machines or tools, or perform other potentially hazardous activities that could cause them to experience seizures (such as operating machinery or riding a stationary bike). Crestor should not be used in patients with known or suspected QT prolongation (QTc interval prolongation) because it may cause abnormal heart rhythm and prolong the QT interval in patients at high risk for heart rhythm problems. QT prolongation can occur at any time during treatment, but it can be at any time during function.

Crestor should not be used in patients with a known or suspected risk of QT prolongation, and it is not recommended for use in patients with a family history of sudden cardiac death. Crestor can also rarely increase the risk of QTc interval prolongation. QT prolongation is more common in patients with a family history of sudden cardiac death than in those with a history of heart rhythm problems.

Before starting treatment with Crestor, tell your doctor if you have or have had any of the following conditions: severe heart problems (vascular insufficiency), recent heart attacks, irregular heartbeat, myopathy, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), lupus erythematosus with rhabdomyolysis (an autoimmune disease that causes muscle atrophy), a personal or family history of connective tissue disease, retinitis pigmentosa (a rare hereditary eye disease that affects the vision), abnormal vision, epilepsy, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, thyroid problems, or diabetes or any other medical condition. Your doctor may adjust your dose of Crestor based on the results of your blood test. Before you start taking Crestor, check the progress of your heart disease and other conditions with your doctor. Do not stop taking Crestor without first talking to your doctor.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had a heart problem (such as heart attack, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, liver problems). Your doctor may continue to monitor your heart disease and other medical conditions while taking Crestor.

Treatment with Crestor should only be used in a treatment-emergent way in a patient with AIDS. If you are taking antiretroviral medications, tell your doctor before taking Crestor that you are taking nelfinavir (Crixivan), saquinavir (Viracept), olanzapine (Anaprox, Zyprexa), pazopanib (Crixivan), or lopinavir/aptopagifenoic acid (Pazopanib) because these medications may affect how they work or worsen your condition.

Crixivan is an anti-histamine drug that works by blocking the action of natural substances (such as histamine) in the body. It works by blocking the release of neurotransmitters (chemicals that affect the normal functioning of the brain). Olanzapine is a very useful drug because it has been shown to decrease the symptoms of HIV infection.

Crixivan can decrease the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors (medications that increase the blood levels of SGLT2) such as v QRICRINE.

Tell your doctor if you are taking cisapride (a medicine used to treat stomach ulcers) or al headavedronate (a medicine used to treat menstrual disorders). Tell your doctor if you are taking cyclosporine (used to treat HIV infection).
